INTRODUCTION TO THE BUDGET WORKSHOP.

Before we get in to the fun stuff, lets cover off what we are doing and why we are doing it

Having a good idea of how much it costs to run, YOU, is possibly one of the most powerful tools that will help you on your way to financial freedom.

Because, of course, how do you get ahead, start investing, or smash your debt, if you don’t know how much it costs to keep the dog fed and a roof over your head.

Knowing this magic number is a rarity for most Australians and if you don’t, its not all your fault though. Basic money skills aren’t taught in school unfortunately, but you’ve got no excuse now.  Once you’ve completed my 4 part Budgeting 50/30/20 Workshop you’ll be well on your way to financial freedom, having nailed your foundations. Good luck!

Before I lose you thinking this is going to be hard, and I don’t want to sit there pouring over excel every week, imputing my spending with my glass of cask wine because Sarah has said I can’t spend… think again.

I am terrible at budgeting! Who has time for all that boring number crunching, but what I do have is a good, solid understanding of my numbers. This program is about teaching you how to understand your numbers too. It might take an hour or two to put this system in place, but from then on, it should be set and forget with only a few minor occasional tweaks needed.

So how does it work?

Over the years I’ve worked with many clients around spending habits and budgeting and this is the solution I’ve came up with.

Divide your income in to sections:

Spending

  • Food: 5%

  • Money for you- splurge: 20%

  • Fuel/transport: 5%

Expenses

  • Housing (rent/mortgage): 30%

  • Utilities (power, gas, water, broadband, phones): 10%

  • Car costs: 5%

  • Insurance: 5%

Savings

  • Holidays/big ticket items: 5%

  • Investing/home loan: 15%

Hold up.. I know what you are thinking.

Sure, these figures might work for you or someone on an average income, but they won’t work for me with 3 kids, or on the minimum wage struggling to get ahead.

But, funnily enough they do, the more someone earns, the more they spend with upgrading their lifestyle to match their wage, the shiny new house with a swimming pool, or the flashy car. However, I know there might be some exceptions, and that’s fine, work these numbers to match you. In this program I show you how.

Now it’s time to move on to the next step and find your numbers.
